Along the Shores of Lullaby Lake inhabits a quieter, dreamlike world. A woman and child rest at the water’s edge while two figures occupy a boat beyond them, surrounded by a dense forest of hanging moss. They seem connected, yet separated by water, distance, and an unknown story.
I began the painting by exploring the cascading forms of moss and foliage, allowing the figures and relationships to develop within the landscape. Although the imagery suggests tenderness and caretaking, I don't see the painting as specifically about motherhood. I am more interested in the space it opens around holding, waiting, watching, and passage.
The title adds another threshold: a lullaby carries us from waking toward sleep. I want the narrative to remain suspended there, somewhere between the recognizable and the imagined, so the viewer is free to decide who these figures are, where they are going, or whether they are going anywhere at all.
